When it rains it pours!

This week has been a bit of a gong show.  Last tuesday Grant had shoulder surgery...2 screws in his shoulder and a fixed tendon.  Surgery went really well (his right shoulder is now level with his left shoulder)...but he's out of commission for a bit...at least 4 weeks in a sling...and not supposed to do anything.   This was him going to work this morning...I had to help him get changed...he couldn't do up his fly.  He has to go to Calgary for a meeting...I hope he doesn't have to go to the bathroom all day...don't know who he's going to get to help him at work!  haha!

Madison has been sick for 3 months now...can't seem to shake her cold...really bad cough and runny nose, and just as it seems like it's getting better...it starts to get worse again.  She managed to pass on her sickness to me, Grant and Evan.  Not a big deal in Grant and I, but not so good in Evan.  Evan started having trouble on wed.  Thursday I took him to the doctor, friday I took him to Emerg here in Canmore and was sent home.  Took him twice on saturday before his condition was taken seriously...by then he hadn't had anything to drink since friday, and was turning blue around the mouth.  He was put on Oxygen to help him breath, and we were taken by ambulance to the Children's hospital. (they took us by ambulance because he was on oxygen).  The Canmore hospital tried 4 times to put an IV in him to give him fluids, but by then he was so dehydrated that they had trouble.  It even took the nurses at the children's hospital 3 tries...they finally got an IV started in a vein in his head. The nurses at the hospital were amazing...took really good care of Evan.  We were discharged and are now back at home...Evan is still coughing and is pretty stuffed up, but his oxygen is good and he's eating again.  Thank goodness.  It was a little scary.

I stayed in the hospital with Evan.  Grant and Madison came to Calgary and stayed with friends who helped look after Madison so Grant could come to the hospital.  Heidi and Matt have 2 girls and Madison was so happy to have 2 older girls to hang out with.

Tuesday we also took Madison to the hospital to get looked at, as she was having the same breathing symptoms Evan was having.  The docs there checked her out and gave her some stuff to help her.  Hopefully she will get rid of this latest virus and not get another one.

Lessons learned this week....trust your gut about your kids health.  It was hard to be sent home from emerg twice...knowing that Evan wasn't well...taking him a 3rd time in 2 days was hard...I didn't want to appear like the paranoid parent...but I knew he needed help.  And next time...I will just go to the Children's hospital the first time.

We feel pretty exhausted.  Between the kids being sick and Grant's surgery...neither of us have slept much in the last week.  We are happy to be home and on the mend.
